The atmosphere was as tense as it could get as Gabe relayed what weâd found at the settlement to Bill and the few others gathered in the room who hadnât been with us. I stood at the back of the crowd, my arms crossed as I leaned against the wall, listening. Thinking. About the things Jace had told us, about what weâd seen both at the hotel in Piqua and in the neighborhood, as well as what had happened in West Milton.
What could we do to protect ourselves?
There werenât a lot of options, considering how little we knew. We were well fortified and armed, but the group attacking other settlements seemed to be as well. Which meant we had to make sure we thought about this both offensively and defensively.
âYouâre certain the same group was responsible for all four attacks?â Bill asked when Gabe had finished speaking.
Gabe, who was as agitated as he got, ran his hand through his brown hair for probably the tenth time since launching into the explanation. âWeâre only going on what weâve seen, but based on the evidence, Iâd say yes.â
Bill looked around. âAnyone think differently?â
Around the room, people shook their heads. Not me, though. I wasnât convinced the attack in West Milton was related.
Doug stood to my right, and when he nodded, I was keenly aware of the movement even though I didnât glance his way. On my other side stood Devon, Rowan next to him. She was as wide-eyed as a deer caught in headlights, while he was as stiff as a statue, fear and worry emanating off him the way stink lines used to waft off Pepé Le Pew in Looney Tunes cartoons.
After months of living with these people, I had a good take on their personalities. I knew how pointless it was to even attempt taking a guess at Rowanâs emotional state based on the presence of tears, because she was the type of person who teared up at nearly everything. Knew Gabe hid his feelings behind his authority and that Devon could turn his emotions on and off faster than someone could flip a light switch. Lisa was fiercely independent and balked at the idea that any woman needed a knight in shining armor, and Brian would put his life on the line for anyone who might be in trouble, not just Gabe. Ari was capable and willing to do what it took to help out and survive, but with his laidback, good-time personality, he was much less suited for this world than the others. Max was a follower. Rick was his own person and had no problem doing his own thing but worked hard to help the whole group succeed. Doug was strong and secure, caring and funny, understanding andâ
Realizing how far beyond logical my assessment of Doug was made me flush, and I had to work extra hard to keep my eyes straight ahead because all I wanted to do was look his way.
âWe know the threat,â Bill was saying, âso now we have to figure out how to handle it.
